The map presents three layers, each illustrating the geographic distribution of the Spanish republican refugees:

• As of 1st April 1939
• At the end of 1939
• The total amount of exiled Spanish currently living in American countries

The layers are intended to offer general information on the main destination sites chosen during the exile, and are based on the most recent bibliographic references on the topic [notably VILAR, JUAN BAUTISTA; La España del exilio. Las emigraciones políticas españolas en los siglos XIX y XX, Editorial Síntesis, Madrid, 2007].

As external contribution will keep coming in we will provide to add new data and layers to explain the information gathered through the reports received.

Browsing the map - Instructions

In order to visualize a layer it is necessary to click on the tick box icon on the right. It is better to show one layer at the time to avoid any superimposition of colours. Once a layer is selected by clicking on any of the countries on the map you will be able to obtain the relevant information. Use the vertical bar on the left to zoom in and out and move the mouse on the picture to change the position of the map. Hidden behind the small green arrow on the right handside there is a legend of all the data being consulted.
